West Orange- and Southwest Orange-area teams had varying degrees of success Friday, Oct. 20. Here's what we learned from Week Nine of the 2023 football season.
1. DP RECLAIMS OL’ ORANGE CRATE.
Fans of good defense were treated to a doozy when the Panthers (5-3) and Warriors (3-5) met for the 2023 Ol’ Orange Crate rivalry game. The Panthers were able to reclaim the trophy after a 10-3 win over the Warriors.
2. FOUNDATION O TOO MUCH FOR WINDERMERE PREP.
The Lions (5-3) piled up 52 points in the first half to put this game away early. Junior quarterback Michael Dove tossed three touchdowns, while running back JT Bronaugh rumbled for 144 yards and two touchdowns. The Lakers (1-5) played hard throughout the game and were able to put up 16 points in the fourth quarter.
3. KNIGHTS RIGHT SHIP AFTER THREE-GAME SKID.
The Knights (4-5) got back into the win column with a 52-21 victory at Windermere (3-6). Quarterbacks Joshua Guerrier and Ja’Cari Jackson combined went 9-for-10 passing for 211 yards. Jackson also tossed two touchdowns. Ocoee wide receiver Tavion Greaves hauled in six catches for a whopping 172 yards and both Jackson touchdowns. Wolverines quarterback Bryce Speed went 18-for-23 for 200 yards and also led the team in rushing with 126 yards on nine carries.
4. OLYMPIA IS A TRUE FORCE.
Olympia (6-2) torched Freedom (1-7), 48-8, to improve to 6-2 for the year. The Titans used a balanced attack — 216 yards and four touchdowns through the air, and 134 yards and three touchdowns on the ground — to keep Freedom off-balance throughout the game. Receiver Xavier Tucker led Olympia with five receptions, 92 yards and one touchdown. Running back Romelo Ware piled up 94 yards — including a 63-yard rumble — on just six carries.
5. LEGACY CHARTER HAS A DUAL THREAT.
In its 37-7 loss to Orangewood Christian (4-4) Friday, Oct. 20, Legacy Charter’s (2-5) Shazarr Roberts had 14 tackles on defense and also led the Eagles offense with 100 yards — 35 on the ground and 65 receiving.
