The Horizon High School Theatre Department will showcase its production of “SIX: Teen Edition” this month.
The full-length adaptation of Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ international phenomenon “SIX” has been modified for teen actors and family audiences. It features the Tudor Queens giving a modern remix of their 500 years of tribulations while courting and being wed to King Henry VIII. At its heart, “SIX” features the talent and uniqueness of the stage performers and musicians casted. It’s a celebration of cis women, trans women, trans people and people who exist beyond the gender binary in any capacity.
The musical is set in a contemporary rock concert. Each of the wives, Catherine of Aragon (Rebeca Castro Mendes), Anne Boleyn (Marieka Wieringa), Jane Seymour (Emily Fielder), Anne of Cleves (Taja-Mya Bennin), Katherine Howard (Mimi Gibbons) and Catherine Parr (Ace Negueruela) take turns telling the highs and lows of their royal love journey to win the chance to be leader of the band. They ask the audience to determine who suffered the most in their marriage to Henry VIII, leading to each queen sharing her story of heartache and misfortune through a mix of pop, rock and hip-hop music.
Together, the sisterhood aspect wins, showing the wit, strength and resilience of women throughout history.
Horizon High School Theatre is under the direction of Ashley Fisher. The performances will run at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, Friday, Oct. 27, ,and Saturday, Oct. 28; and at 2 p.m. Oct. 28. Tickets can be purchased here.
