Nicole Puhr has been with Oakland Avenue Charter School for four years, initially serving on the first-grade team before transitioning to a math intervention/coach role. Last year, she eagerly volunteered to take on the role of school testing coordinator.

Puhr is known for her extensive knowledge, dedication and positive presence on campus. Over the past two years, she has been a valuable School Leadership Team member and will continue supporting OACS by facilitating several curriculum nights.

“Her exceptional ability to analyze data has significantly impacted student achievement and teaching practices,” said OACS principal Pam Dwyer. “Given her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment, Nicole truly deserves to be recognized as the Influencer of the Week.”

What brought you to your school?

After my husband was transferred to Florida, I spent a few years as a stay-at-home mother. My children had already been students at OACS for a year. I had been thinking about becoming a substitute teacher when the school had an opening in first grade. Ms. McMillian, a former teacher, messaged me about applying for the job, and within a few days I was part of the OACS family.

What do you love most about your school?

I love that OACS has a community feel to it! Every staff member works hard to make the school what it is! I am very blessed to work with the staff and parents that make this school what it is.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love being a teacher, but the most rewarding part of my job is working with the students! I love watching them grow as individuals and see them mature into great people. It is always so much fun to hear about your student’s success as they continue through school and beyond. I am truly blessed to be able to be a part of the journey.

What would you be if you weren’t in this profession?

When I first started college, I originally wanted to be a lawyer. I loved the idea of getting into family or educational law. If I had not decided to go into teaching, I probably would have continued to work toward a law degree.

Who influences you?

My family is the biggest influence on me. I grew up in a family of teachers (grandmother, aunt, both parents and one of my sisters). They have been a great support and sounding board throughout my career. My husband and two sons also push me every day to be the best I can. Showing my children that hard work pays off keeps me working toward new goals.

Who was your favorite teacher when you were in school? Why?

My favorite teacher was my fifth-grade teacher. He was the first teacher to make me want to go to school and helped me to love and value learning. I remember him playing his guitar in the morning before he read to us.

What is your favorite children’s book and why?

“Giraffes Can’t Dance,” by Giles Andrea. It is a great book about working hard and being ok with being different. The book talks about finding what makes you happy and continuing to do it regardless of what others think.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Both of my boys are very active in a local travel baseball team; therefore, we spend a large amount of our time at the baseball fields. I love spending the time watching them do what they love. Outside of baseball, I love to read.

If you could dine with any famous person, past or present, who would it be and why?

If I could dine with a famous person, it would be Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Jackie is a past Olympian who, after winning multiple medals in the Olympics, went back to her hometown of St. Louis and started a foundation to encourage children to pursue both athletics and academics. I would love to hear about how she worked hard at becoming a gold medalist and her path to helping so many people live a better life.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

I would wish for the power to be able to heal people. I hate seeing people sick or hurt, especially children. If I could heal the sick, I would.

If you could only listen to three bands or artists, who would they be and why?

I love country music, so I would have to say Zac Brown Band, Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan. I like to listen to fun music that you can sing to.

What was your go-to lunch and favorite snack as an elementary student?

As a student, I ate a lot of plain ham sandwiches for lunch. We would also have chips and fruit with it. I loved Cheetos for my lunch! My favorite snack has always been popcorn. I could still eat it every day!

What is your favorite holiday and why?

I love Christmastime. It is so nice to be able to see the whole family and spend time together. My parents come down from Chicago to spend time with us. As a family we always try new local holiday events. I also love the smell of fresh Christmas trees; how beautiful everything looks all decorated and covered in lights.

Who was your best friend when you were in school and why? Are you still in touch?

My best friend in school was named Summer. We met in eighth grade when my family moved from Chicago to Pittsburgh. We are still in touch, but due to living in different states we do not get to see each other that much.

What were your extracurricular activities as a student? Did you win any accolades or honors?

As a student I played softball and basketball and ran track.

How long have you been at your school and with OCPS?

This is the beginning of my fifth year at OACS. Before OACS, I taught for 13 years on the south side of Chicago before my family moved to Florida.
