In one of the most highly anticipated seasons in the young program's history, Windermere High football has kicked it off in spectacular fashion — topping Harmony (0-1) on the road, 21-3.
Led by senior quarterback Jack Reilly and his three touchdown passes to Shawn Falahpour, Jaylen Davis and Bryce Speed; all in the first half, the Wolverines offense started the season fast.
"The offense was clicking in the first half," coach Riki Smith said following the win. "I'm proud of the way we played for 24 minutes. We need to do a better job of finishing, but all in all, for the first game of the season, I’m proud of the boys."
On the other side of the football, Windermere defensive coordinator Jeremy Campbell also had his unit ready to go come kickoff.
"The defense played extremely well," Smith said. "Coach Campbell did an outstanding job schematically getting them ready to play. If not for a 52-yard field goal, it would have been a shutout."
Defensive end Daniel Bradley led Campbell's side with three sacks on the night.
Including its kickoff classic game against Gateway High, the Wolverines have outscored its first two 2024 opponents by a combined 53 points. That's not enough to distract Smith and his team's focus on what's important, the next game.
"One game at a time," Smith said. "We're continuing to give maximum effort, doing the little things in the weight room, film study, nutrition and practice habits. Contagious positivity is something we really focus on, building your brother up."
With two more road games before Windermere finally comes home to its brand-new on-campus stadium Sept. 13, Smith will continue to have his players focused on what's in front of them.
"Tomorrow isn’t promised, we have to just keep focusing on getting better every single day," he said.
Next up, Windermere will travel to Cypress Creek High Friday, Aug. 30. Game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
