In a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, the West Orange Warriors football team gave their always passionate, rowdy and loud home crowd plenty to cheer for in their opening game of the 2024 season — following the postponement of its Week 1 game at Evans High due to weather — beating Wekiva High, 32-14.
"The kids played for each other tonight!" West Orange High coach Geno Thompson said. "Regardless of the ups and downs throughout the game, they never pointed fingers (and) always had each other's back. This is a special group."
On offense, it was sophomore quarterback Brian Dillard who led the way through the air and on the ground nearly 250 total yards with four total touchdowns — including a 75-yard rushing TD. Junior wide receiver Edison Delgado was one of Dillard's favorite targets on the night, connecting with him multiple times for 62 yards and a score.
Warriors running backs Nehemiah Burgess and Jayden Ammons also contributed to the balance of the offensive attack, nearly evenly combining for over 100 yards rushing on the night.
Athlete Devonte Anderson also caught one of Dillard's two passing TDs, while scoring a second touchdown on defense; a 65-yard interception return.
Joining Anderson with a spectacular performance in the defensive backfield was Michigan commit Ivan Taylor, who caught two interceptions against the Mustangs, while defensive lineman Matheus Kaminski led the front by sacking the Wekiva quarterback twice and forcing a fumble.
