OARS has four top 10 finishers at 2024 USRowing's Youth Nationals

Three of the four qualified for the A final, including a fifth-place finish by its Men's Youth 4x boat.

After a rousing showing at regionals — which saw nine Orlando Area Rowing Society boats qualify for USRowing’s 2024 Youth National Championships — OARS had four boats finish in the top 10 at the national competition held in Sarasota from June 6-9.

Three of those four boats qualified for the A final heat; which is the final comprised of the top eight boats in each specific category, the following eight fastest boats compete in the B final, then C and finally D. 

The OARS' Men’s U17 4x boat, comprised of Tyler Huurneman, Taylor Maehl, Danilo Del Vecchio and Jacob Arcella, was the top finisher of the club's representatives, finishing fifth with a time of 6:46.76. The Men’s Youth 4+ boat, made up of Ryder Bax, Zander Chilson, Clement Newbold, Tyler Murphy and Mykolas Binkys (coxswain), finished sixth with a time of 6:47.61. 

On the girls side, the only OARS team to qualify for an A final was the Women’s U17 8+ boat, which was comprised of Delaney Moore, Kate Derda, Gabriella Rivera, Nora Goote, Chase Kozak, Maija Andert, Anna Andert, Gabriella Spotts and Lily Harhi (coxswain). This group finished seventh, 7:23.01.

The Women's U16 8+ boat, comprised of Lara Awad, Lauren Pendell, Conley Morris, Emily Schurr, Noelle Murray, Lily Murphy, Emerson Elliott, Ivey Kirkland and Mia Llama (coxswain), qualified for the B final heat and finished 2nd — 10th overall — with a time of 7:28.24. 

Here’s how the other five OARS boats faired at nationals:

  • Women’s Youth 4+
    • Finished 8th in Final B, 16th overall.
  • Men’s Youth 8+
    • Finished 4th in Final C, 20th overall.
  • Men’s Youth 2V8+
    • Finished 5th in Final C, 21st overall.  
  • Men’s Youth 4-
    • Finished 7th in Final C, 23rd overall.
  • Women’s U17 4+
    • Finished 3rd in Final D, 27th overall.
