The Ocoee Fire Department celebrated recently three of its leaders' service milestones.

First, Ocoee City Manager Craig Shadrix helped to honor Ocoee Fire Chief Tom Smothers with an award for 20 years of service.

"I truly have a hard time believing my time with the Ocoee Fire Department has hit 20 years already," Smothers said. "It does not feel like it has been that long. Following God's plan for me has been very rewarding. It is an honor and a pleasure to serve the citizens and visitors of the city of Ocoee."

Fire Lt. Brian Shiver also was honored and received his 25 years of service award from Smothers.

Shiver said serving as a firefighter has been a rewarding journey.

"I grew up, went to school, played baseball and football, and made some good friends over my lifetime here in Ocoee," he said. "In 1999, I was given the opportunity to serve the city where I was raised. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some amazing firefighters and learning from some great leaders, responding to emergencies, and making a difference in our community. At times, the challenges have been immense, but the sense of fulfillment from saving lives and protecting property is unparalleled. Each day has brought new experiences and opportunities to learn, grow and serve. Reflecting on these years, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the chance to contribute to the safety and well-being of the citizens of the city of Ocoee and for the friends I have made along the way."

Fire Lt. Paul Whitaker also was honored to receive his 30 years of service award from Smothers.

He said working at the Ocoee FD has been a very gratifying career.

"I grew up in the Ocoee area," he said. "I moved here in 1980. I feel privileged to serve and take care of people in the town I grew up in. I have worked with a lot of great people over the years. The fire department is like a second family. It doesn’t feel like a job when you love what you do. I hope myself and the men and women I have worked with have made a positive impact on the lives of the people who call on us. I feel privileged to work at this department and serve the citizens of Ocoee, and I plan on staying another three years till I finally retire."
