Driver dies when vehicle hits pond

Rescue units were unable to free the individual once the vehicle was submerged.

The Winter Garden Police Department responded to a call at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, regarding a vehicle that had crashed through a fence and landed in a retention pond on West Colonial Drive between Ninth Street and Beulah Road.

Police were notified the driver had not exited the vehicle, and officers worked until the Winter Garden Fire Rescue Department arrived, trying to break in to remove the occupant. According to police, the driver was tangled in the vehicle and officers were unable to extract the person.

The Orange County Fire Department’s dive team arrived and was able to remove the driver, the only occupant, from the vehicle. The driver died as a result of the crash, police said. His information is not being released until next of kin has been notified. This is an ongoing investigation.
