Windermere High thespians will be taking one of Broadway’s longest-running shows to the stage from April 11 to 14. Students will be performing their production of “Chicago High School Edition” at the Performing Arts Center at Windermere High School, 5523 Winter Garden Vineland Road.
Showtimes will be 7 p.m. April 11 to 13, and a 2 p.m. matinee will be held on April 14. The cost $10 for general admission and $15 for premium seating. Tickets can be purchased at the box office during either show date or in advance at teachtix.com/WHS.
Windermere High Theatre’s production of “Chicago” features a cast and crew of about 50 students. The classic American musical takes place in the city of Chicago during the 1920s and is based on the 1926 play of the same name written by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. The story is based on actual crimes and criminals and is a satirical interpretation of the administration of criminal justice and the concept of a “celebrity criminal.”
“It’s actually based on true stories, which is really cool,“ said BambiEllen Fadoul, who is the show director and a drama teacher for the school. “It’s (about) the fight for fame and how far you’ll go to get it.”
Fadoul added that the high-school edition of “Chicago” was released this year and said Windermere High will be the first school in Orange County to produce the high school version of the show. She also said that one of the reasons she chose “Chicago High School Edition” as the spring musical was to challenge her students.
“I chose ‘Chicago’ for the sole purpose that these kids have done a lot of standard musical theater … (and) they needed something different,” Fadoul said. “I wanted to give them something that was a little bit more challenging. … The high school edition (of ‘Chicago) was just released this year, so we’re actually the first ones in the area to do this (show).”
